When science is stranger than fiction

On 10 April 2019 at 15:00 CEST (Brussels time) the European Commission presented a ground-breaking discovery by Event Horizon Telescope – an international scientific collaboration aiming to capture the first image of a black hole by creating a virtual Earth-sized telescope.

This validates what Einstein proposed more than 100 years ago in 1915!

There are two things that fascinates me:

  1. The engineering effort that went into it
  2. How Einstein imaged/thought about this so many years ago

The engineering effort that went into it:
Here are couple of videos that explain how the team of brilliant scientist achieved this, explained in plain english:

How Einstein imaged/thought about this so many years ago:

Albert Einstein used thought experiments to think about things that were impossible, because of technological limitation. Thought experiment is a powerful mental model.

He used thought experiments for some of his most important discoveries. The most famous of this thought experiments was on a beam of light, which was made into a brilliant children’s book. What would happen if you could catch up to a beam of light as it moved he asked himself? The answers led him down a different path toward time, which led to the special theory of relativity.
